(Read article 1: A Super Bowl game to the death – with Achilles as one of the players.)
The chieftains who attack Troy wear breastplates of leather with protective bronze plates. They have shin guards that are constructed in a similar way. They wear helmets, which are also made of leather with bronze plates or bones of wild boar. Their weapons are bronze swords and bronze knives, which often have been inherited for several generations, but they are mainly fighting with spears. They protect themselves with large leather shields that cover their entire bodies if they crouch down behind them. The shield hangs in a strap over the shoulder. This is what Achilles and the other chieftains wore in the battle:
In the Battle of Troy, as a regular warrior, you probably only have leather protection. Your helmet probably consists of a thick felt hat made of wool. Your spear is your most important weapon, but you’ll also throw stones. Only cowards use the bow. Probably you have some kind of shield, but it may not be as well-crafted as the chieftains’ shields.
The chieftains use war chariots pulled by horses on the battlefield. Each chariot is pulled by two horses and two warriors can fit in the chariot. One of the warriors is charioteer and steers the chariot to the battle. Then, the second warrior jumps off to fight while the charioteer drives away a little bit to protect the chariot and the horses. Most warriors, however, fight on foot. Chieftains are expected to fight in the front row. The worst thing that can happen is to be seen as a coward. This applies both to chieftains and to you as a warrior.
You (or Achilles if you want) are standing on the vast field with the sun in front of you, but the sky is cloudy so you won’t be dazzled. It’s also foggy because the field is low-lying, next to the sea, and in addition a small river runs along one side of the field. You’ll have to fight slightly uphill for several miles until you’ll reach the walled town of Troy. The summer nights are bright so you’ll have to be prepared to fight both day and night. In other words, you must be very strong and in good shape. You probably have toddlers at home. Because you can’t be too young or too old to have enough strength for the heavy battle.
A battle could be resolved in several ways. Instead of everybody fighting, the conflict could be resolved with single combat. The greatest warrior from each side was chosen and the two warriors fought to the death. The winning side was the one whose warrior survived the single combat. If you belong to the greatest warriors, this is something you must be prepared for. In Battle of Troy, the chieftains try this at first.
A battle could also be temporarily interrupted by a chieftain holding up a spear horizontally in the air with the hand at the middle of the spear. Conflicts could also be resolved through negotiation and bargaining. This also happens in the Battle of Troy.
Now the Trojans are approaching with noise and cries. Their bronze helmets shine in the morning light. You raise your spear and run into the battle.
